Krabbenhoft CV – May 2022

Postdoctoral Researcher

Darren Shoemaker

I am broadly interested in understanding climate influences on ecological systems. My work empowers natural resources management agencies and policymakers to make decisions sensitive to future climate conditions. My research is relevant to environmental justice, ensuring conservation and restoration efforts are applied equitably to benefit historically disenfranchised communities. I obtained a Bachelor and Master of Science from Purdue University – Fort Wayne and a Ph.D. in Forest Resources from Mississippi State University. I have experience in machine learning, statistical, and data science techniques and have contributed to projects on land use change in Bangladesh, hypoxia and chlorophyll in the Gulf of Mexico, stream and wetland restoration in the Midwest, and recovery of endangered amphibians. My postdoctoral work examines paleoclimate records to understand the Earth’s response to rapid warming similar to that observed during the 21st century climate crisis.

PhD Candidate

Susanna Keilig

Susanna is a PhD student whose scientific interests span aquatic systems and include movement ecology, community ecology, invasion ecology, and conservation biology. She is broadly interested in the many anthropogenic impacts on aquatic systems and how her research can be applied for a more environmentally just future. Susanna grew up in New Hampshire and obtained her Bachelor of Science from Roger Williams University in 2016 where some of her favorite research topics included quahog larval dispersal, invasive rats on Polynesian islands, and ethical environmental anthropology. Prior to attending the University at Buffalo, Susanna has worked at an environmental firm in the Lake Tahoe region, helped develop a nature center for the public in Reno, NV, and worked as a deckhand educator while living aboard a tall ship through the World Ocean School. In her free time, Susanna enjoys camping, skiing, and snuggling her cat, Moss.

PhD Student

Jonah Fronk

I am a PhD student interested in investigating community interactions in freshwater environments. I am broadly interested in ex situ and in situ conservation of less charismatic taxa, especially aquatic arthropods and mollusks, community ecology, and the evolution of specialized community interactions. I obtained my undergraduate degree at Utah State University, completing undergraduate research examining feeding behavior in snakes. I also completed a master’s degree at Colorado State University studying high-elevation dragonflies in their southern range limit. Before becoming a PhD student, I started as a technician at the University at Buffalo helping to propagate native mussels and follow their growth and survival in water bodies around Buffalo.

PhD Student

Elise Rinke

I am a Ph.D. student studying aquatic invasion ecology. I am broadly interested in applied conservation biology, environmental justice, and increasing public access to scientific research through outreach and science communication. I graduated from University of Pittsburgh with Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Environmental Science, a minor in Chemistry, and certificate in Sustainability. Before starting graduate school, I worked in a lab studying the impact of chytrid fungus on amphibian populations, interned at the Department of Environmental Protection collecting data on wetland management and Lake Erie bluff erosion, served as a board member for the Feathers, Scales, and Tails exotic animal rescue, and managed a community garden focused on reducing food insecurity by providing free produce and gardening resources. In my spare time, I enjoy camping, canoeing, and competing in triathlons.

Undergraduate Honors Student

Hal Svetanics

I am a senior undergraduate Bioinformatics and Computational Biology major here at the University at Buffalo. My research focuses on the movement of insecticides throughout intermittent streams and their effects on non-target invertebrates following treatment for the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). My interests include integrated pest management, biological control, pesticide movement throughout the environment, and insect toxicology. I hope to develop sustainable pest management strategies in agriculture that limit the use of pesticides and promote beneficial insects. Outside of the lab, I like to run, hike, snowboard, and build terrariums.

Undergraduate Honors Student

Siobhan Lanich

I am a senior in the Department of Biological Sciences. My research involves improvements to water quality in urban streams by native freshwater mussels, with an emphasis on removal of E. coli. My interests include conservation biology, urban ecology, and science communication. Broadly speaking, I hope to work towards a more sustainable future that benefits both humans and wildlife. In my free time I enjoy hiking, playing video games, and riding my bicycle.

Undergraduate Student

Aidan Sumrall

I am an undergraduate senior in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University at Buffalo, currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in bioinformatics and computational biology. My research includes the integration of artificial intelligence, such as large language models, with Python to expand and broaden our research discovery process and enhance our literature search capabilities while expediting and optimizing the data extraction process. I am looking forward to continuing my education abroad in the United Kingdom with the hopes of joining research to help contribute to the reintroduction and population recovery of the Eurasian Beaver (Castor fiber) in Great Britain.
